Poland win gold medal at fencing world champs

Poland has won the women’s épée team event at the 2023 fencing World Championships in Milan, Italy.

The Polish team beat the hosts Italy 32:28 in the final on Friday, public broadcaster TVP Sport reported.

The gold medals went to Renata Knapik-Miazga, Martyna Swatowska-Wenglarczyk, Ewa Trzebińska and Magdalena Pawłowska.

On their way to victory, the Polish team defeated defending champions South Korea 33:32 in the semifinals.

It is Poland’s first-ever world title in the women’s épée team competition, and the first fencing gold medal for the country since 2007, the PAP news agency reported. 

The victory also greatly enhances the Polish team’s chances of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, TVP Sport reported.
