First, the start of the game scheduled for Saturday evening (or night, if you look from the European point of view) was postponed by 2 hours. When it finally began, the two best tennis players in the world spent only 19 minutes on the court in Cancun before the duel was put on pause due to abysmal weather conditions. Then, after almost two hours of waiting for a meteorological miracle, their match was postponed to the next day, with the score at 2:1, 30:30 for the Pole.
The resumption is planned for Sunday, not earlier than 22:30 Polish time. If the weather allows, that is...
Before the game was paused, Świątek won 12 points while Sabalenka gained 10. It is worth mentioning, however, that in the fierce wind smashing the court, in total they committed as many as 10 unforced errors in these 22 plays (Świątek 6, Sabalenka 4).
This course of the match follows what the fans witnessed throughout the entire tournament. The widely discussed WTA's decision to play the Finals in Cancun, Mexico, led to a situation where the top Women's tournament concluding the season takes place on courts described as "faulty" by the players and pundits alike - in stormy weather, and oftentimes with almost no spectators, as Cancun is certainly not Wimbledon in terms of local tennis traditions and fanbase.
Such pictures are witnessed almost every day of the tournament, so the situation at Saturday's semi-finals probably didn't catch anyone by surprise. Still, it doesn't make the players, the coaches and the fans any less angry.
