The French bid received overwhelming support, garnering 84 of 88 votes, though it is conditionally selected pending key financial guarantees from the French government.

Meanwhile, Salt Lake City's bid was endorsed by 83 members, with six dissenting votes. This decision will mark Salt Lake City’s second time hosting the Winter Olympics, following the 2002 Games. The city is showcasing a detailed plan to reuse Olympic venues from 2002 and organizing events in two distinct zones.

The announcement comes as Switzerland continues advanced discussions for potentially hosting the 2038 Winter Olympics, signaling a strong future candidate.

French President Emmanuel Macron personally addressed the IOC to dispel any doubts about France’s commitment, emphasizing the nation's readiness and referencing the successful organization of the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics starting this Friday.

Macron declared that the necessary legislation and financial backing would be prioritized by the new government.

The IOC has stated that while it has received numerous assurances, including a state guarantee on Olympic organization and financial commitments from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions, it will not sign the host city contract until these are formally secured.

France has deadlines set for October 1 to provide these guarantees, with parliamentary ratification required by March 1, 2025.

Thomas Bach, President of the IOC, expressed full confidence in France's capability but emphasized the obligation to ensure the Games' organization in the athletes’ and stakeholders’ best interest.

The French Olympic Committee, led by David Lappartient, expressed joy at the decision, noting the swift and successful preparation following their experience with the upcoming Summer Games in Paris.

France has a storied history with the Winter Olympics, having hosted them in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968) and Albertville (1992).

Salt Lake City’s organizers, including delegation head Fraser Bullock, highlighted their readiness and the human spirit that would complement their extensive physical infrastructure prepared for the Games.

The next Winter Olympics will be held in Italy's Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2026.
