Piątek, who plays for German club Hertha Berlin, picked up the injury in the side’s 2-1 win over Schalke Gelsenkirchen in the Bundesliga on Wednesday.

Hertha said in a statement afterwards that Piątek would miss their final two games of the season “after tests diagnosed a fractured ankle.”

The injury means that Piątek will be left out of the Poland squad for the Euro 2020 tournament, the national team doctor, Jacek Jaroszewski, was quoted as saying on Friday morning.

He added that the 25-year-old striker would undergo surgery in Germany on Friday and could be out of action "for three to four months."

Poland will in June face Slovakia, Spain and Sweden in the group stage of this year's European championships, a tournament rescheduled from last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Poland are scheduled to open their group-stage campaign with a fixture against Slovakia at Krestovsky Stadium in the Russian city of St. Petersburg on June 14.

The Poles will next take on Spain at Estadio La Cartuja in Sevilla on June 19 and then play Sweden in St. Petersburg four days later.

Ahead of the European tournament, Poland will play two friendlies on home turf at the start of next month, taking on Russia in Wrocław on June 1 and then Iceland in Poznań on June 8.
