Tomala scored an unlikely victory in the men’s 50km event on August 6 despite competing at this distance for only the second time.

He has revealed he had to work as a construction worker before the Olympics to finance his preparations.

"The story of our Olympic champion Dawid Tomala is unbelievable and perfect movie material," Morawiecki wrote on Facebook on Sunday.

"Today, he is inspiring millions of people with his enormous optimism, although his road to the top wasn't easy," Morawiecki added.

"We want Dawid Tomala's fantastic sporting story to continue, but in such a way that he no longer has to work after training in order to finance his sporting passion," the prime minister also wrote.

"I have asked the managers of Totalizator Sportowy to provide sponsorship to our champion—he has deserved it," Morawiecki announced.

Tomala, who hails from Poland’s southern coal mining region of Silesia, completed the last-ever Olympic 50km race walk in 3 hours, 50 minutes and 8 seconds.

By winning, he claimed Poland's fifth Olympic gold in racewalking, after Robert Korzeniowski's four victories at the Atlanta Games in 1996, Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004.
