Italy’s Arianna Fontana won the event on Saturday, narrowly outracing Maliszewska in the final.

A week earlier in Beijing, Maliszewska topped the World Cup podium, while Fontana came in second.

After their strong finishes this season, the 26-year-old Pole and the 31-year-old Italian are tied in the lead at the World Cup standings for the women’s 500 metres, just over three months before the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Maliszewska in November 2018 became the first Polish short-track speed skater to win a World Cup event.

She in February 2019 became the first Pole to win an overall World Cup title in the sport.

Maliszewska in January took the silver in the women’s 500 metres at the 2021 European Short Track Speed Skating Championships on home ice in the northern Polish city of Gdańsk.
