Poland, who are the reigning world champions, are set to take on Mexico on Sunday in their next match at the championships, which run from August 26 to September 11.

The Poles, managed by Serbian coach Nikola Grbić, play Bulgaria, Mexico and the United States in the first round of the championships, which are being jointly hosted by Poland and Slovenia.

Originally, the tournament was due to be held in 10 cities across Russia, but the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) stripped Russia of its right to host the event following Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Poland defeated Brazil in the last two world championship finals to win titles in 2018 and 2014.

Poland's national volleyball team last year won the bronze at the 2021 Men's European Volleyball Championship.
