The plan, signalled last year, was outlined by Sports Minister Kamil Bortniczuk on Thursday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The sports minister told a news conference in Warsaw that the project would be launched on March 1.
It is dubbed Olimpia to mark 100 years since Poland’s first appearance at the Olympic Games, in Paris in 1924, according to officials.
1,000 new school gyms by end of 2024
Bortniczuk said: “It is Poland’s biggest-ever sports infrastructure programme, worth PLN 2 billion over two years, 2023 and 2024. This year the funding totals PLN 800 million (EUR 170 million), and a further PLN 1.2 billion (EUR 250 million) will be made available in 2024.”
The money will finance the construction of more than 1,000 multi-purpose sports halls for schools around the country, reporters were told.
The sports minister said that the project had been fine-tuned thanks to a pilot programme that saw the construction of five school sports halls last year.
Local governments may apply for funds to help finance such projects from March 1, Bortniczuk said.
