The 21-year-old Pole, who is the defending champion at Indian Wells, said after the match: "It was a really tight match, and I'm really happy that I actually played such a tight match, because now I see how I can handle those situations after a couple of matches that were kind of one way."

The Polish player, coached by countryman Tomasz Wiktorowski, will next face Britain's Emma Raducanu in the women’s singles competition at the tournament in the California desert.

Świątek, who has been ranked world No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) since April 2022, last month won the Qatar Open tennis tournament in Doha to claim her 12th career singles title.

Świątek defeated Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the women's singles at last year's Indian Wells.
