Tennis: Poland’s Linette through to 3rd round of Italian Open

Poland’s Magda Linette has made it through to the third round of the women’s singles at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, with a straight-set win over Linda Nosková of the Czech Republic.

The 30-year-old Pole, who is ranked world No. 19 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated the 54th-ranked Czech player 7-6, 6-1 in their second-round clash in the Italian capital on Thursday.

Up next for Linette at the clay-court tournament in Rome is either Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia or Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

Meanwhile, Poland’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek is due to play Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round on Friday.

Świątek won last year's Italian Open. She also triumphed in Rome in 2021.

The 2023 Italian Open runs until May 21.
