Tennis: Poland's Hurkacz makes Round 3 at Australian Open

Poland's Hubert Hurkacz has made it through to Round 3 (Round of 32) at the 2024 Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Hurkacz, the world No. 9 in men's tennis, overcame the Czech Republic's 144-ranked Jiri Menšík in five sets, 6-7 (9-11), 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, in Round 2 (Round of 64) on Thursday. 

The Pole will play France's 20-ranked Ugo Humbert for a place in Round 4 (Round of 16).

Hurkacz is the third Polish player to make Round 3 at the 2024 Australian Open.

Earlier in the day, Poland's world No. 1 Iga Świątek went through to Round 3 after beating America's Danielle Collins 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

On Wednesday, Poland's 69-ranked Magdalena Fręch advanced to Round 3 thanks to a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Caroline Garcia of France.

Poland's Athlete of the Year Świątek reached the semi-finals of Australian Open in 2022.

The 2024 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, runs on the hard courts of Melbourne Park until January 28.
