Valencia opened the scoring in the 44th minute on home turf, but Barcelona rallied with goals by Lewandowski in first-half stoppage time and four minutes into the second half, news outlets reported.

The Polish goal machine, who plays for Barcelona and also captains Poland’s national squad, scored the first goal after an assist from right winger Lamine Yamal. He later converted a 49th-minute penalty kick for his second goal.

“My objective is to score goals," Lewandowski said after the match. "It's important to start the season like this to give us more confidence,” he added.

His two goals ensured a successful La Liga debut for Barcelona's new coach Hansi Flick.

The German replaced former club great Xavi Hernández at the end of last season.

Flick was once Lewandowski's coach at German giants Bayern Munich.

The Polish marksman on Sunday started his third season as a Barcelona player.

Lewandowski in November took home the Spanish premier league's Pichichi top scorer award for the 2022/2023 season.

The award was presented after he ended his first season with Barcelona in June last year, by winning the Spanish top flight's golden boot.

The Pole has now scored 50 goals for Barça in all competitions.

Lewandowski has previously won seven top scorer awards in the German Bundesliga, where he played for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern.

The Polish marksman in October 2022 won the Gerd Müller Trophy for the best striker of the 2021/2022 season at the France Football Ballon d'Or Awards in Paris.
