Tennis: Poland’s Świątek through to 2nd round of Australian Open

Poland’s Iga Świątek has made it through to the second round of the women’s singles competition at the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The 23-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 2 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), opened her 2025 Australian Open campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech player Kateřina Siniaková.

Up next for the Polish tennis star at Melbourne Park is Slovakia's Rebecca Šramková.

Świątek reached the third round of the women’s singles at last year's Australian Open, where she was eliminated by Linda Nosková of the Czech Republic.

The 2025 Australian Open started on Sunday and runs until January 26.
