The channel, which is Poland’s answer to BBC Radio Three in its focus on all aspects of culture, started broadcasting on March 1, 1937. It was originally called Warsaw 2.
As March 1 also marks the 212th anniversary of the birth of composer Fryderyk Chopin, Polish Radio 2’s programming for the day devotes a great deal of attention to Chopin’s music.
In line with a long-standing tradition, at noon Polish Radio 2 will carry live a Chopin recital from the composer’s birthplace at Żelazowa Wola, some 50 km west of Warsaw.
This year’s soloist is Piotr Alexewicz, a participant in the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw.
At 7 p.m. Warsaw time, a special recital by Canadian pianist Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu, the winner of last year’s Chopin competition, will be broadcast from Warsaw’s National Philharmonic Hall by Polish Radio 2 and on the Youtube channel of the National Chopin Institute.
Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu will appear again in the same hall on Wednesday.
Both events are dedicated to the victims of the war in Ukraine. Volunteers from the Roman Catholic Church's Caritas relief charity will be collecting donations to help Ukrainian refugees.
