The idea for the event came from Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Irina Zhytynska, who has lived in Poland for nearly two decades and built a successful career, including as a soloist with the Wrocław Opera in the country's southwest.

The concert will feature acclaimed Ukrainian soprano Sofia Soloviy alongside two leading Polish opera singers, tenor Rafał Bartmiński and bass Rafał Siwek.

The programme includes works by both Polish and Ukrainian composers.

The concert’s motto, “Contra spem spero (I Hope Against Hope), I shall live! Away with dark thoughts!" is inspired by a poem by Lesya Ukrainka, one of Ukraine’s most revered writers.

The singers are performing without fees, and all ticket proceeds will be donated to the Ukraine Foundation, which provides aid to war victims.

The concert organisers said: "It is estimated that over a million lives have been lost since the beginning of this war. Each of us can, in our own way, directly or indirectly, contribute to ending this conflict or alleviating the consequences of a war that has dragged on for so many years."

They added: "The needs in this war-torn country are immense, and every form of support is invaluable."

The event is held under the auspices of Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar.
