The judges, led by film producer Mike Downey, described The Wedding Day as "a rich, provocative and brutally incisive portrait of Polish society and history."

According to the jury, the film offers "a biting expose of modern-day corruption, historical revisionism, deep rooted hatred of the other, in a perfect revelatory concoction of abhorrent crimes both past and present in the heart of Europe."

The script was hailed as "an uncompromising narrative and powerful evocation," constituting "an aesthetically complete, unified piece of art."

A tale of a young, pregnant Polish bride-to-be who wants to open a vegan restaurant in Ireland, and her ostensibly rich and law-abiding businessman father, who seems to have other plans, The Wedding Day premiered in October, starring Michalina Łabacz, Robert Więckiewicz and Andrzej Chyra.

Tallinn's Black Nights Film Festival is one of the biggest events of its kind in northern Europe, showcasing some 250 features to a combined audience of 80,000 people every year.

The 2021 edition, held between November 12 and 28, marked the Estonian festival's 25th year, the PAP news agency reported.
