Polish nominees earn praise despite missing out on Oscars

A Polish deputy prime minister has congratulated cinematographer Janusz Kamiński and creators of the short film “The Dress,” who flew the flag for Poland at this year’s Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.

A 30-minute feature by Tadeusz Łysiak, The Dress was short-listed for Best Live Action Short Film. The Oscar went to Riz Ahmed’s The Long Goodbye, news agencies reported.

Polish Deputy PM Piotr Gliński congratulated Łysiak and his team on the prestigous nomination.

Meanwhile, two-time Oscar winner Kamiński was nominated for his work on Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. In the end, the accolade was given to Greig Fraser for Dune.

Gliński, who is also culture minister, congratulated the cinematographer as well, stressing that Poland was "proud" of having its representatives at the Oscars "for another year in a row."  

In the high-profile categories, Sian Heder’s CODA won the Oscar for best film, while Jane Campion won the best director accolade for The Power of the Dog.

Jessica Chastain won best actress for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye,  and Will Smith was chosen best actor for his turn in King Richard.
