A major retrospective of work by Polish-British director Paweł Pawlikowski opened in Rome on Friday with the screening of his 1990s documentaries From Moscow to Pietushki, a poetic portrait of the Russian writer Venedikt Erofeev, and Serbian Epics about the leader of Bosnian Serbs, war criminal Radovan Karadzic.

Another of Pawlikowski’s early BBC documentaries – Tripping with Zhirinovsky – is to be shown on June 17. It charts the career of the ultranationalist Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who died last April.

The Pawlikowski retrospective, which lasts until mid-July, also includes his feature films: The Last Resort, My Summer of Love, The Woman in the Fifth, Ida and Cold War.

Ida won the 2015 Academy Award for Foreign Language Film, the first Polish film to do so, whereas Cold War earned Pawlikowski the Best Director Award at the Cannes Festival in 2018.

The Pawlikowski season in Rome is organized by the Piccolo Cinema America Association together with the Polish Institute in Rome.

Born in Warsaw in 1957, Pawlikowski left Poland at the age of 14. He first lived in Germany and Italy before moving to Britain.

He studied literature and philosophy. In the mid-1980s he took up filmmaking, initially focusing on documentaries.

He currently resides in Warsaw. (mk/tf)
