Cate Blanchett confirms attendance at Camerimage in Poland, despite festival controversy

One of the most renowned actresses in the world, Cate Blanchett, along with the rest of the jury, will participate in the festival in Toruń in northern Poland, in spite of sexist comments made by the event’s director, Marek Żydowicz, regarding the role of women in the film industry.

As previously reported by Radio Poland, British director Steve McQueen canceled his participation in this year's ENERGACamerimage Festival on Tuesday in response to controversial comments made by festival director Marek Żydowicz.

His remarks, which were criticized by British and American cinematographers' associations, suggested that changes in industry parity could result in more mediocre films.

According to Variety Australia, Cate Blanchett and the other jury members of Poland's Camerimage festival have released a statement expressing their continued support for the event and their commitment to engaging in "meaningful discussions" following the festival director's controversial remarks regarding the lack of female cinematographers in the lineup.

The jury, which includes Cate Blanchett, Anthony Dod Mantle, Anna Higgs, Sandy Powell, Rodrigo Prieto, Łukasz Żal, and Jolanta Dylewska, emphasized in a statement that “We welcome debate regarding gender representation” and reaffirmed their commitment to “meaningful discussions” about increasing inclusion and recognizing excellence in all forms within the industry.
