The 32-year-old picked up the injury during Poland’s match against Andorra in Warsaw on Sunday, broadcaster TVP Info reported.
Lewandowski scored twice on Sunday night, but was substituted in the 63rd minute.
Clinical and imaging studies later showed "damage to the collateral ligament of the right knee,” the Polish Football Association (PZPN) said in a statement on Monday.
It added that “it usually takes from 5 to 10 days to treat this type of injury” and that Lewandowski would now return to his German club Bayern Munich “where he will undergo further rehabilitation."
Poland beat Andorra 3-0 at home on Sunday in their second 2022 World Cup qualifier.
The Polish team will now take on England in its next World Cup qualifying fixture away in London on Wednesday.
