Meanwhile, officers stopped 1,069 drunk drivers during their Safe Easter 2021 road safety campaign, which lasted from Good Friday to Easter Monday, according to Robert Opas from the National Police Headquarters (KGP).

The Easter weekend is usually when Poles spend time with their extended families and travel extensively to visit their relatives. Family gatherings are often accompanied by alcohol.

This year, amid the spread of the coronavirus, officials called on people to stay at home and spend the Easter break only with their immediate family.

The government advised citizens to practice social distancing, while also reimposing a wide range of restrictions on daily life.

The health ministry appealed to Poles to limit social interactions and reschedule get-togethers "to a safer time."

During last year’s four-day Easter weekend amid the COVID-19 pandemic, 17 people died and 128 were injured in 118 road accidents nationwide, according to police statistics cited by state news agency PAP.
