Poland’s Niewiadoma earns bronze at cycling worlds

Polish cyclist Katarzyna Niewiadoma has taken the bronze in the women’s elite road race at the world championships in Leuven, Belgium.

Italy's Elisa Balsamo won the 157.7-kilometre race on Saturday, ahead of Marianne Vos of the Netherlands.

Poland’s Niewiadoma said after the event: "At the end of the day, I'm definitely happy with bronze. It’s my first medal at the worlds and I’ve been riding for almost 10 years so I'm definitely stoked about it.”

Her third-place finish on Saturday marked the first world championship medal for Poland in women's cycling, state news agency PAP reported.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Sport Minister Piotr Gliński tweeted: "Success in cycling at last! A big congratulations to Katarzyna Niewiadoma."

The 26-year-old Polish rider in 2019 hit a career high by winning the one-day Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands.
