The awards were presented at a ceremony in Warsaw on Tuesday.

Established in 1998, the L'Oréal-UNESCO International Awards for Women in Science recognize outstanding women scientists worldwide. Those exceptional researchers are honored for their contributions to the advancement of the life and physical sciences, mathematics, and computer science.

To date, more than 4,100 female scientists have received these awards, including 123 from Poland and five who have gone on to win Nobel Prizes.

Statistics show that women represent only 33.3 percent of researchers globally, with less than 4 percent of Nobel Prizes in science ever awarded to women. Additionally, just 11 percent of senior research roles in Europe are held by women.

Radio Poland's Danuta Isler filed this report after the awards ceremony.
