WWII Warsaw revolt remembered 76 years on

31.07.2020 14:45
Every year on August 1, people in Warsaw, and much of Poland, stop to the sound of sirens in a moving tribute at exactly 5 p.m. to remember "W Hour," the time when the city’s heroic 1944 uprising against the Nazi Germans began in the dark days of World War II.

This year sees the 76th anniversary of the bloody wartime revolt, which ended in the annihilation of the Polish capital.

While the day is usually observed with massive gatherings, most of this year's events on August 1 will not be open to the public due to restrictions on the number of people allowed at concerts and museums.

Many events commemorating the 1944 Warsaw Uprising will instead be held online.

Radio Poland's Agnieszka Bielawska has this report.
