Mateusz Morawiecki made the statement during an EU summit in Brussels, Belgium in the early hours of Tuesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Morawiecki told reporters: “After several hours of discussion we agreed that the 6th package of sanctions will include an embargo on oil."
He added: “This is very important because oil is one of the main sources of income that Russia uses to finance the war.”
Triumph for EU 'solidarity and unity'
“Today, solidarity and unity triumphed again in the European Council and the European Union,” Morawiecki said.
He added that Poland had played an important role in persuading its regional partners Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to back the proposed ban on Russian oil.
“I can reveal that we succeeded,” he told reporters.
Morawiecki hailed the EU embargo on Russian oil as “very important news for the security of Poland and Europe, and good news for Ukraine, which is fighting for its independence and sovereignty.”
Sixth round of sanctions
The oil ban was unveiled by European Council President Charles Michel, who said that it would put “maximum pressure on Russia to end the war.”
The sixth round of punitive measures also includes removing Russia’s biggest lender, Sberbank, from the SWIFT global financial messaging system, in addition to sanctions on individuals responsible for war crimes in Ukraine, Michel said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement on banning Russian oil, saying it would "effectively cut around 90 percent of oil imports from Russia to the EU by the end of the year."
The two-day EU summit continues on Tuesday.
Tuesday is day 97 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
