Local police received information that the remains of a dog had been found in one of the summer houses at the Skubianka holiday resort near Lake Zegrzyńskie in Poland's central Mazowieckie region, the tvn24.pl website reported on Wednesday.
The centre, owned by Poland’s State Forests agency, had previously been rented for years by the Russian embassy in Warsaw, according to officials.
“A dead, starved dog was found in one of the summer houses at the Skubianka holiday centre, which had been retaken from the Russian embassy,” Michał Gzowski, a spokesman for the State Forests, confirmed.
He said the agency's staff found the dog’s remains after entering one of the summer houses to take stock of the equipment there.
Gzowski told reporters: “It was a really drastic sight and the room was filled with the stench of the decomposing carcass. There were numerous and deep dents in the door, suggesting that the animal was trying to get out of the house.”
Gzowski confirmed that the discovery was reported to the police, according to tvn24.pl.
The State Forests retook the holiday centre earlier this month, after terminating the tenancy agreement with the Russian embassy in April with immediate effect, according to officials.
The six-hectare complex, which had been rented by Russia since the 1980s, comprises two hotels, two villas and eight summer houses, all of which have fallen into serious disrepair, news outlets reported. There are broken windows, rotting floors and collapsed roofs, as well as devastated furnishings.
The lease was terminated due to non-payment of PLN 12,000 (EUR 2,545) in monthly rent and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, officials told reporters.
Wednesday was day 259 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
