NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will be chairing the meeting at the alliance's headquarters in the Belgian capital on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Polish defence ministry said.

It added that the gathering would focus on "Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine" and its "impact on the security of the Euro-Atlantic area."

NATO defence ministers are expected to "summarise steps taken so far to strengthen deterrence and defence on NATO's eastern flank, including increasing the readiness of Allied forces," according to the Polish defence ministry.

They also plan to discuss "the development of defence capabilities and defence industry potential of NATO countries," Polish state news agency PAP reported.

"The NATO ministerial meeting will be preceded by a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group chaired by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and attended by representatives from several dozen countries," the Polish defence ministry also said.

While in Brussels this week, Poland's Błaszczak is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral talks with his counterparts from a number of NATO countries, including Lithuania, Sweden and Italy, reporters were told.

NATO's Stoltenberg on Monday warned that Russia’s anticipated major new offensive in Ukraine was already under way

He "noted the urgency of delivering key capabilities to Ukraine before Russia can seize the initiative on the battlefield," according to the nato.int website.

Stoltenberg told reporters that the alliance's defence ministers were expected to "agree a new level of ambition for NATO defence planning and address ways to increase defence industrial capacity and replenish stockpiles."

They will also take steps to increase the protection of critical undersea infrastructure and discuss ways to maintain and step up defence spending across the alliance, Stoltenberg said.

Tuesday is day 356 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
