In its report, published on Friday, it specified that as of 24 February 2022, 9177 civilians had been killed and 15,993 wounded in Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression.
According to the UN report, those killed include 4202 men, 2506 women, 281 boys and 225 girls, while the gender of 29 children and 1,934 adults has yet to be determined. The regions with the highest number of civilian casualties were Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kiev and Luhansk regions.
The report indicates that the actual civilian casualty figures are much higher, as there are delays in receiving information from the battle sites and many reports are still unconfirmed. This is particularly the case in Mariupol, Lisichansk, Popasna and Severodonetsk, where numerous civilian casualties are reported.
According to the UN, the most common causes of civilian deaths were rocket and bomb attacks, as well as mine and unexploded ordnance explosions.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine also said that three times as many civilians were killed in 500 days of full-scale war as in the previous eight years of hostilities in eastern Ukraine.
