The pledge came during a meeting in Warsaw, where Poland's Donald Tusk and Sweden's Ulf Kristersson emphasized their shared perspective on the challenges posed by Russia and the importance of transatlantic bonds.

Tusk highlighted the alignment of Poland and Sweden in their views on Russian aggression in Ukraine, the necessity of aiding Ukraine, and the significance of maintaining transatlantic ties, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

He underscored the importance of solidarity and action among Europe, the United States, and the broader North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) without any room for doubt or disloyalty.

Tusk assured Kristersson of full Polish backing for Sweden's pending NATO membership, a process approved by all members and currently hindered only by Hungary.

The Polish prime minister described Sweden's decision to join NATO as excellent news for Warsaw, signaling enhanced regional security and solidarity.

Kristersson, for his part, pointed to the potential for cooperation in security and defense not just between Poland and Sweden but also with other Baltic Sea states, emphasizing the importance of bolstering the region's security.

He also addressed global challenges, suggesting that the European Union ought to consider additional sanctions in response to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, for which he said Vladimir Putin was personally responsible.

The discussions also covered the importance of combating unfair competition in the European market, with Tusk mentioning the specific challenges faced by the Polish agricultural sector.

Both leaders expressed their intention to work closely on forming European policies that protect against such competition while balancing climate protection needs with the existential interests of key societal groups, notably farmers.

Kristersson's visit to Warsaw included plans to visit the headquarters of the EU’s border protection agency Frontex to learn about the bloc's efforts in border protection, crime fighting, and managing return operations.

He stressed the readiness of both nations to strengthen their bilateral defense and security cooperation, highlighting the importance of innovation, business and the fight against organized crime as areas for collaboration.

The meeting underscored the strong bilateral relations between Poland and Sweden, rooted in a shared understanding of the current geopolitical landscape and a mutual commitment to European security and support for Ukraine in the context of ongoing Russian aggression, officials told reporters.
