Plans include appointing a senior civilian official to Kyiv and establishing a new command in Germany to coordinate military aid and training for Ukrainian forces.

The Wall Street Journal, citing US and NATO officials, reported that these measures will be announced at an upcoming summit in Washington next week.

According to the newspaper, the initiatives aim to bolster Ukraine's chances of joining the Alliance without granting immediate membership. This comes as right-wing political movements in Europe gain momentum and the likelihood of Trump's return to the White House, which could lead to a reduction in American support for Ukraine, increases.

NATO is creating a new command in Wiesbaden, Germany, to oversee the supply of military equipment to Kyiv and the training of Ukrainian troops. The operation, named NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine, will be staffed by approximately 700 military personnel from the US and other NATO member states. The new command will assume many responsibilities currently managed by the US military since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Wall Street Journal notes that these initiatives have been under consideration for several months but have gained urgency following President Joe Biden's perceived weak performance in a recent televised debate with Trump, alongside Trump's criticisms of the financial burden of US support for Ukraine.
