In this context, Poland's top diplomat referred to the speech of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who called for a ceasefire while emphasizing both Ukraine's territorial integrity and Russia's "legitimate security interests."
During a press briefing in New York, FM Radosław Sikorski described Wang Yi's statement as "interesting," noting that "it can be interpreted in such a way that it could be considered by the parties to the conflict," according to the Polish state news agency PAP.
"China's foreign minister Wang Yi has declared at the UN Security Council that Russia's aggression against Ukraine could be resolved based on respect for territorial integrity and respect for each other's security interests. If it means what I think it means, it could be significant," conveyed the Polish head of diplomacy via social media.
The proposal from China's Wang Yi will be clarified in talks with Sikorski
Sikorski also announced that during his stay in the United States, he would meet with Wang Yi in person and "will ask for additional clarification on what he meant."
This provides another opportunity for further discussions regarding the resolution of the conflict between the Russian aggressor and Ukraine.
Sikorski: China could play key role in mediating Ukraine conflict
The Polish FM added that China could not only mediate but also "force peace on Russia."
Radosław Sikorski acknowledged that while China supports the Russian war machine, it does not directly supply weapons to Russia. However, the largest country in Asia should be taken seriously. "It is a great power. I think we need to listen carefully to what they say," emphasized the minister.
