Duda is on his way to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv together with his Baltic counterparts, Lithuania's Gitanas Nausėda, Latvia's Egils Levits, and Estonia's Alar Karis, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

The Polish president’s top foreign policy advisor, Jakub Kumoch, told the media: “Our aim is to support President Zelensky and the defenders of Ukraine at a decisive moment for this country.”

Kumoch, who is accompanying Duda to Kyiv, added that the decision to visit Ukraine had been taken together with the Baltic states, which “are our key partners in terms of regional security.”

On Tuesday, the presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia met at a special summit in the southeastern Polish city of Rzeszów to express solidarity with Ukraine and discuss support for Poland’s eastern neighbour amid the Russian invasion.

Wednesday's trip marks the first visit by foreign heads of state to Ukraine since the Russian assault began on February 24, the PAP news agency reported.

Several European leaders have previously travelled to Kyiv for in-person talks with Zelensky, including Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński last month.

After that meeting, Kaczyński proposed that NATO, possibly with other international organisations, send a peacekeeping and humanitarian mission to Ukraine.

Last week, the Ukrainian president was visited by the European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell; European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen; and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Wednesday is day 49 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
