The leaders of the foreign-affairs, defence and EU-affairs committees of the Polish Sejm and the German Bundestag issued a joint declaration after a meeting earlier this week, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

‘Shock, outrage and opposition’

The Polish and German MPs said in the statement that they were “shocked and filled with outrage and opposition … to the enormous human suffering and destruction caused by Russia” in Ukraine.

They called on the international community “to do everything we can to stop the aggressor’s bestial acts in Ukraine’s territory.”

‘Ban Russian oil’

The Polish and German lawmakers appealed for the European Union “to impose much wider sanctions against Russia,” in particular “to issue an embargo on Russian oil as soon as possible.”

In addition, the statement voiced support for “Ukraine’s aspiration to join the EU” and called for “military and humanitarian aid” for Poland’s embattled eastern neighbour.

‘European solidarity is possible’: Polish deputy FM

Commenting on the joint declaration, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk told the PAP news agency that it was “a very important statement.”

He noted that the German signatories represented all three parties in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government.

Szynkowski vel Sęk observed that the statement went “further than the German Cabinet’s decisions so far.”

He said the declaration issued by the Polish and German lawmakers “is a sign that European countries can achieve solidarity” in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Hopefully, Germany’s government will make decisions in the same spirit of solidarity,” he added.

Friday is day 51 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
