Mateusz Morawiecki made the appeal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Monday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
'Ukraine has to be independent and sovereign'
Speaking at the launch of the Polish House in Davos, Morawiecki said that after Russia’s "barbaric attack" on Ukraine, a new world order should be created that makes such aggression impossible.
“We have to work towards a peaceful solution, but this peaceful solution has to mean that Ukraine has to be independent and sovereign,” he added.
Morawiecki also said that "peace could reign in Ukraine only after Russia has been beaten—beaten by our actions, by devastating sanctions."
Call for 7th package of sanctions against Russia
Later in the day, in an interview with the state-run TVP info news channel, Morawiecki said that sanctions against Russia should be designed to stop Russian President Vladimir "Putin’s war machine.”
“This morning, I told the European Council President Charles Michel that we should start working on the seventh package of sanctions,” Morawiecki said.
The European Union is preparing its sixth package of punitive measures in response to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Plans include an embargo on Russian oil, but some member states, such as Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, want to be temporarily exempted. They argue that as landlocked countries, they would have difficulty in securing oil from elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Poland is pushing for a tax on Russian oil if these exemptions were to be granted, the PAP news agency reported, citing diplomatic sources.
Tuesday is day 90 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
