“Why are they doing this? Russia wants to destroy the normal life of every European, in all countries of our continent. It wants to weaken and intimidate all of Europe. Where Russia can't do it with the force of conventional weapons, it does it with the force of energy weapons,” Zelensky said on Saturday in a nightly address on social media.
He added that the key response to the aggression should be “a strengthening of all levels of sanctions and a reduction of Russian oil and gas revenues,” as well as “even more unity, even more coordination, even more help for each other.”
Zelensky also quoted Russia’s Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline's indefinite closure, recently announced by Gazprom, and he blamed the Russian forces for a cutoff of the Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on August 25, which he said was caused by Russian shelling and which barely avoided a radiation leak.
Europe has accused Russia of using energy supplies as a weapon and a part of its military aggression on Ukraine, while Moscow has said technical issues and sanctions were the cause of the disruptions.
