Ukraine’s president has urged the international community to put an end to Russia’s missile strikes on his country, saying: “The world can and must stop this terror.”

Volodymyr Zelensky made the appeal in a post on the social messaging app Telegram on Saturday afternoon, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

On Saturday morning, Russia launched another wave of missile strikes on critical infrastructure across Ukraine, leaving almost 1.5 million people without electricity, according to officials. 

Zelensky told his compatriors: “The aggressor continues to terrorise our country. At night, the enemy launched a massive attack: 36 rockets, most of which were shot down.”

He added: “Thanks to all air defence services for their work. To all energy workers and services that are currently working at the sites of impact and restoring our infrastructure. You are our heroes!” 

Posting a photo showing the fallout from a Russian strike, the Ukrainian president said: “The photo is just one of the examples of how the enemy tries to break us! These are vile strikes on critical objects. Typical tactics of terrorists."

Nine regions of Ukraine hit by Russian missiles on Saturday: General Staff

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Saturday evening that Russian strikes earlier in the day had hit nine Ukrainian regions: Volyn, Rivne, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa and Mykolaiv, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.

Over the previous 24 hours, “the occupiers carried out 40 missile strikes and deployed 16 Iranian-made Shahed-136 attack UAVs [“kamikaze” drones],” Ukraine’s General Staff also reported, adding that “Our defenders shot down 20 cruise missiles and 11 UAVs,” as cited by Ukrainska Pravda. 

Ukraine repels Russian attacks in Donetsk region 

Meanwhile on the frontlines, Russian forces were attempting to maintain control over occupied territories, holding back Ukrainian troops on several fronts, as well as attempting to advance on the Avdiivka and Bakhmut fronts, in the eastern Donetsk province, according to Ukraine’s military officials.

In the past 24 hours, Ukraine’s defence forces have repelled Russian attacks near Bakhmut, Ozarianivka and Odradivka in Donetsk region, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Ukraine strikes Russian concentration point in Zaporizhzhia, killing 200 troops

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces struck a Russian manpower and equipment concentration in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, killing some 200 Russian soldiers and injuring over 150; and destroyed a Russian ammunition dump and 10 pieces of weapons and military equipment, the website said, citing Ukrainian officials.

In addition, Ukrainian aircraft on Saturday carried out 10 airstrikes, hitting nine areas of concentration of Russian weapons and equipment, as well as several anti-aircraft defence systems, Ukraine’s General Staff said. 

Moreover, Ukrainian air defences struck down one Russian helicopter and the country’s rocket-and-artillery units hit a Russian command post, two concentrations of Russian military personnel, weapons and equipment, as well as one ammunition-storage point, Ukraine’s military command also reported on Saturday evening, as cited by Ukrainska Pravda.

Saturday is day 241 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
