On Sunday night, a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Russian drones, launched as part of an attack near the Ukrainian port city of Izmail, had fallen and exploded in Romanian territory. Bucharest has denied these claims.

According to Oleh Nikolenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the information originated from the State Border Service of Ukraine.

"Tonight, during a massive attack by Russia in the area of the port of Izmail, Russian Shaheds (Iranian-made circulating munitions) fell and detonated on Romanian territory," Nikolenko wrote in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, Reuters quoted a spokesman for the Romanian Defense Ministry as saying that the authority "categorically" denies any reports suggesting Russian drones had fallen and detonated on Romanian territory on September 4.

The RFE/RL Romanian Service reported that the Romanian Foreign Ministry also weighed in, declaring that the Russian attack did not "generate direct military threats to Romania's national territory or territorial waters." It added that measures to bolster defenses on the country's eastern flank had already been implemented.

Romania, a NATO member, shares a border with Ukraine and has strategic importance due to its proximity to the conflict. The port of Izmail, near where the alleged incident occurred, is one of Ukraine’s ports on the Danube River, close to the border with Romania.
