Russia launches drone attack on Ukraine’s Kharkiv

Russia has carried out a massive attack with unmanned aerial vehicles on Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv, causing fires and damaging civilian facilities, according to local officials.

The strike was conducted using at least 10 drones overnight into Friday, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported. 

Russian UAVs hit a local school, setting the building on fire and destroying its roof and two floors, Kharkiv police said on the Telegram social messaging app.

Russian drones also set ablaze a residential building, a service station and an administrative facility, The Kyiv Independent website reported.

The strike damaged outbuildings, garages and cars, according to officials.

Emergency services and firefighters were at work dealing with the aftermath of the attack, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, The Kyiv Independent reported.

Ukrainian authorities have warned the public that Russia will step up its attacks as winter sets in, according to news outlets.

On Wednesday, Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said his country had suffered the heaviest day of shelling so far in 2023, The Kyiv Independent reported. 

Ukraine makes further gains near Bakhmut in counteroffensive against Russia: ISW 

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces advanced further near the eastern city of Balkhmut, and continued their push in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, as part of their ongoing counteroffensive against Russia’s invading army, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

The US think tank made the assessment in its latest report on the war in Ukraine, published on Thursday night. 

Ukrainian forces advanced further northeast of the railway line near Klishchiivka, 7 km southwest of Bakhmut, the ISW reported, citing geolocated footage released on Wednesday.

Ukrainian troops “continue assault operations south of Bakhmut (Donetsk oblast), inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the enemy, and consolidate their new positions,” the General Staff in Kyiv said in its frontline update on Friday morning.

Moreover, Ukraine on Thursday continued counteroffensive operations in Zaporizhzhia, the ISW reported.

Ukrainian troops continued their "offensive operation on Melitopol’ axis” in Zaporizhzhia province, “inflicting losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, exhausting the enemy all along the front line,” according to the military authorities in Kyiv.

In all, Ukrainian and Russian forces on Thursday clashed in 50 combat engagements, Ukraine’s General Staff said. 

Russian strikes

Russia on Thursday launched seven missile attacks, 70 air strikes and 93 attacks from multiple-launch rocket systems on the positions of Ukrainian troops and on civilian settlements, according to Ukrainian officials.

Russia also fired 38 Shahed attack drones and a Kh-59 guided missile against Ukraine, including the northeastern city of Kharkiv, overnight into Friday, The Kyiv Independent website reported

Ukraine’s air defences brought down 24 of the 38 unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as a Kh-59 missile, according to officials.

Russian attacks resulted in casualties and injuries among Ukraine's civilian population, news outlets reported, and private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were also destroyed or damaged.

Ukrainian attacks

Meanwhile, Ukraine on Thursday launched 13 air strikes on concentrations of Russia troops as well as weapons and military equipment sites, and a further two air strikes on Russian anti-aircraft missile systems, the General Staff in Kyiv said.

Ukraine also fired missiles into a Russian command post, four concentrations of Russian troops, weapons and military equipment, a Russian electronic warfare station, a Russian ammunition depot, eight Russian artillery systems and one other important Russian target, according to the Ukrainian military. 

As part of its latest counteroffensive against Russia, Ukraine is pushing through Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, in a bid to reach the port of Melitopol on the Sea of Azov, as well as aiming to retake Bakhmut in the east, among other objectives.

Germany supplies drones, air-defence radar to Ukraine 

Germany has provided a fresh package of military aid to help Ukraine fight the Russian invasion, the Espreso TV website reported on Thursday night.

The latest German military assistance includes seven Primoco One unmanned aerial vehicles, two TMRL-4D airborne surveillance radar systems, and 12 armoured personnel carriers, according to officials.

Ukraine has also received two anti-missile defence systems for helicopters, 32 SatCom satellite communication terminals and 12 MAN TGS trucks, Espreso TV reported.  

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Friday is day 618 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
