Ukrainian partisans blew up the Russian train in Melitopol on Friday morning, the Espreso TV website reported.

The explosion damaged the railroad and a diesel locomotive with cars, according to Ukraine's National Resistance Centre.

Russia was transporting ammunition and fuel from Crimea to Russian forces in Melitopol and Dniprorudne on a daily basis; on the way back, the train carried ore, grain and damaged equipment from the temporarily occupied territories, Espreso TV reported.

The railway line from Crimea to Melitopol plays a crucial role in Russian logistics, officials in Kyiv said.

Heavy fighting for Marinka

Russian forces on Friday continued offensive operations in Ukraine near Kupyansk, northeast and near Bakhmut, near Avdiivka, west and southwest of Donetsk City, in the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast, making advances in several areas, the Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, reported.

Ukrainian and Russian troops are locked in heavy fighting for control of the destroyed town of Marinka and its surrounding areas, in Donetsk province, the British ministry of defence said on Friday.

Russia is likely seeking to capture two nearby highways to advance further west towards the town of Kurakhove, officials in London added.

Despite "incremental advances," a major, "operationally significant" Russian breakthrough in this sector remains "highly unlikely," the UK ministry of defence assessed.

Saturday is day 661 of Russia's war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
