Kindergartens in Poland close amid surge in COVID-19

Kindergartens across Poland closed on Monday for two weeks under the latest swathe of COVID-19 restrictions amid a surge in the epidemic.

But nurseries remain open for children of medics, who are at the forefront of the country's battle with the virus, as well as for those of soldiers, police and firefighters.

Under new rules that came into force for two weeks from Saturday, large retail outlets and churches are able to admit fewer people.

Hairdressers and beauty parlours have been shut. Only professional athletes are allowed to use sports facilities.

Schools for older children remain closed.

Announcing the new COVID rules last week, when the daily rise in infections hit a record, Health Minister Adam Niedzielski warned that Poland was "in a crisis situation."

On Sunday, Poland reported 29,253 new coronavirus infections and 131 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,250,991 and fatalities to 51,884.
