“So much time has passed since we joined the European Union, and of which great European freedom we all fully enjoy,” Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Monday as the country marked 19 years since it joined the bloc.

The president added that “this is a day of joy, as well as reflection about the future.”

“So much time has passed since we have been part of this great enterprise that is the European Union, and we are indeed in full aspect participants in this great European freedom, and to which we have often become accustomed,” Duda said.

In a joint statement with the president, Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that “by joining the European Union, we simultaneously returned to our motherland of civilization. In this sense, we can say that a certain justice has been fulfilled, a certain historical justice has been completed, and what Poland has long been due has been realized then,” the head of the government in Warsaw said.

According to Morawiecki, in the context of the European Union and its challenges, cooperation and collaboration “is absolutely fundamental.”

“At the political level, we can see very clearly that those European Union countries that [...] have a good level of cooperation between all elements of the system of governance are better able to carry out the fundamental tasks of transforming the economy, raising the quality of life of all their citizens,” the prime minister said.

He added: “Today is a joyful day on the one hand, but on the other hand it is a day of reflection, because anyone who takes a look around at the world can tell that we are at a geopolitical crossroads.”

Poland has been a member of the European Union since May 1, 2004, under the Accession Treaty signed in Athens on April 16, 2003, along with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
