At 11:00, participants will pay tribute to the victims of Majdanek by laying wreaths and lighting candles at the Column of the Three Eagles on the third prisoners' field.
In 1943, prisoners working under the leadership of Albin Maria Boniecki and Stanisław Zelent secretly placed a small box of ashes inside the monument. Since then, it has become the first mausoleum and memorial dedicated to the victims of Majdanek.
The ceremony includes the unveiling of a commemorative mural in front of the Visitor Service Center and the premiere of the memoirs of Bolesław Burski, a former prisoner of KL Lublin, titled "Pawiak, Majdanek, Auschwitz...". The event will conclude with a guided tour of the exhibition "Memorabilia".
The Majdanek concentration camp, established by the Nazi Germans, was in operation from October 1941 until July 1944.
During this period, an estimated 130,000 individuals were interned at the camp, with about 80,000 perishing due to starvation, illness, forced labor, executions, and gas chambers. Of those who died, 60,000 were Jews transported from various parts of Europe.
The camp also imprisoned political detainees, criminals, Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals, prisoners of war, and individuals seized during round-ups, deportations, and suppression efforts.
