During a press conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that recruitment of Ukrainian volunteers is only starting at the beginning of October, even though Poland was already prepared for training last month.
Earlier, in July, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the establishment of a Ukrainian legion made up of volunteers from Ukraine living in Poland and Europe, which would be trained by the Polish Army.
“I understand that Ukraine has now taken steps related to information, recruitment, and promotion of this process, so we are counting on results,” said the Minister of Defense, specifying that around 300 individuals may participate in the training, although there were initially hopes for a larger interest from Ukrainians.
"If the first group of several hundred volunteers is formed, we will train them immediately," assured Kosiniak-Kamysz.
So far, as part of the EU program, Poland has trained over 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers. Efforts to support Ukraine continue, including participation in international projects such as ammunition purchases.
According to Ukrainian media, the first recruitment center for volunteers from Ukraine who wish to fight in the war has been opened in Lublin, in eastern Poland. Photos from the location were shared on the Telegram channel of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
