In September, Klich's candidacy for Poland's new ambassador in Washington received a positive opinion from the Polish Lower House of Parliament's (Sejm) Foreign Affairs Committee. This appointment is opposed by Polish President Andrzej Duda, though - who has already announced that he will not sign Klich's nomination.
"Indeed, the president does not sign any ambassadorial nominations. Sometimes he is accusing people of being co-responsible for the Smolensk disaster. Sometimes he is suggesting the impropriety of their origins. Sometimes he accuses the candidates of treason or being an agent. Meanwhile, I submitted applications in accordance with the Foreign Service Act, in accordance with my prerogatives - and it is the prerogative, but also the duty of the president to sign or revoke ambassadorial nominations. I regret to say this, but for 11 months the president has not signed a single ambassadorial nomination - including for the now former senator Klich.”
- Minister Sikorski told the state news agency PAP on Saturday.
At the beginning of November, Polish MFA spokesman Paweł Wroński told PAP that Klich had met all formal criteria and had been approved by the Sejm's Foreign Affairs Committee as a candidate for the Polish ambassador to the US. He added that Klich had also received the consent of the American side to take up the post, had gone through all the procedures resulting from the act amended by the previous government of Law and Justice (PiS) conservatives, and would represent Poland.
Klich has been criticised by now-opposition Law and Justice MPs, who demand that his candidacy is withdrawn by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. They cite Klich's critical statements about the new President-elect Donald Trump from two years ago as the reason. In 2022 Klich's post on the X platform stated that Trump is an "unbalanced politician who does not respect democracy."
