The speech by the head of the Polish government came just before the Polish national press agency PAP, quoting Yonhap, a South Korean news agency, reported that South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency, accusing the opposition of sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government’s work.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, starting on January 1, 2025, will be exceptional as it coincides with a critical time in which Europe must undergo significant changes.

He emphasized that Poland’s goal will not only be the survival of the EU, but also its political offensive, stressing that the Union must start thinking "Polish" in many matters.

Pivotal events on war and peace may be ahead

Tusk noted that the coming months could bring pivotal events concerning war and peace to the east of Poland, requiring a profound shift in some European priorities.

The Secretary General of the EU Council, Therese Blanchet, pointed out that Poland’s presidency will be the first operational one in the new cycle after the European Parliament elections and expressed readiness to support Poland in this undertaking.

The main priority of the presidency will be security in its broadest sense, including military, energy, food, and health security.

According to plans, 40,000 guests are expected to visit Poland in the first half of 2025, with a budget of 412.5 million PLN (over 96 million EUR) allocated for organizing the presidency.

PM Tusk added that after Poland, Denmark will take over the presidency of the EU Council, and both presidencies will aim to set the tone for the necessary changes in European philosophy.
