According to CBS News, one of the suspended initiatives, Uniting for Ukraine, allowed approximately 240,000 Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s aggression to enter the United States. Another granted entry to 530,000 people from countries such as Cuba, Haiti, and Colombia.

The third initiative targeted individuals from certain South American nations with close relatives holding U.S. citizenship, permitting them to come to the U.S. All beneficiaries had assigned sponsors - U.S. citizens who provided financial support.

The decision halts the ability of affected migrants to regularize their status, and in the meantime, they may face deportation if their temporary status is revoked.

Officials argue that prior vetting procedures were flawed and contained errors, making it necessary to reassess applications for national security reasons.

The move threatens to cast a cloud of uncertainty over many migrants who applying for immigration benefits that would allow them to stay in the U.S. legally and, in some cases, permanently.
