Currently serving in the Foreign Ministry’s Europe Division, Finkelstein has previously held the position of Israeli Consul General in Mumbai.
His appointment will be presented to the relevant committees and the full government by Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s Foreign Minister, as reported by The Times of Israel.
Media reports previously confirmed that the current ambassador in Warsaw, Jakov Livne, had been recalled to Israel, with Finkelstein later selected to take his place.
Who is Yaakov Finkelstein?
Finkelstein has a long diplomatic career, having served as a cultural attaché at the Israeli Embassy in Warsaw from 2005 to 2008 and held positions in Israeli missions in Baku, Azerbaijan, and Pretoria, South Africa.
He has also worked in various roles at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem.
At the end of February, Finkelstein represented the Embassy, the State of Israel, and Israeli diplomats at the funeral of Marian Turski, a renowned Holocaust survivor, historian, and prominent figure from Poland, known for his efforts to preserve the memory of the atrocities of World War II.
Yesterday, the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland (FODŻ) announced that Finkelstein, as the chargé d'affaires of the Israeli Embassy in Poland, visited their headquarters.
The diplomat is temporarily leading the mission following the recall of the previous ambassador, until a new ambassador is officially appointed.
