Architectural Digest, an American magazine focusing on design, innovative homes, culture and travel, has compiled a list of nine charming European cities that it says are "even more stunning in the winter."

The Hungarian capital Budapest tops the list. The southern Polish city of Kraków follows in second place.

In its profile of Poland’s former royal capital, Architectural Digest writes: "The symbol of this historic Polish city is the Wawel Dragon, and just as that fire-breathing beast could dispel winter’s chill, the city’s inviting cafes and restaurants offer respite from the wind blowing off the Vistula river."

It adds: "When the wind calms down, the Dobra Atmosphere Hot Air Balloon offers panoramic views of Kraków. The balloon is not only a tourist attraction, it also doubles as a laboratory collecting data on air pollution. After taking in a bird’s-eye view of the city, a stroll through the Jewish Quarter is especially atmospheric on gray or snowy days.”

The Architectural Digest list also includes Edinburgh, London, Lucerne, Madrid, Munich, Paris and Prague.
