Poland approaching peak of flu cases?

Dr Tomasz Smiatacz from the Gdańsk Medical University and a consultant on infectious diseases has shared his opinion on the current flu wave with the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Dr Smiatacz has said that he expects the peak of the current flu wave to pass in the coming weeks.

"The current flu mainly attacks the upper chest area, however, it sometimes attacks the lungs too. The virus is itself capable of causing pneumonia but it can also act by making the system vulnerable to bacterial infection. We observe this pattern of infection especially in children and the elderly."

Smiatacz explained that the viruses are in a sense trying to "catch up" for the period of lack of infections due to widespread mask wearing in the main COVID period.
