Chmielewska has spent decades assisting the poor, homeless, and most vulnerable, including children, elderly, and disabled refugees from Ukraine.
In her letter, addressed to the president, the first lady, the speaker of the Sejm (lower house of the Polish Parliament) Szymon Hołownia, and all members of parliament, she pleaded for continued aid for the Ukrainians her organization has supported for years.

Chmielewska highlighted the human cost of the presidential veto. Many of the refugees she supports cannot work and survive on minimal pensions. She asked pointedly:
"Do I buy schoolbooks for the children for the new school year if they will lose the right to study in Poland? Will 86-year-old Mrs. Raisa, a retired engineering professor whose home was bombed, have the right to healthcare?"

Małgorzata Chmielewska described the harsh reality faced by the most vulnerable:
"I invite President Nawrocki to meet my wards, look them in the eyes, and say: ‘Go away, little one, go away, old man, from where you came. We cannot afford you. You are useless, and being born unlucky is not our problem.’"
She concluded with a moral appeal:
"No political, economic, or moral excuse justifies what has happened. Playing with the weakest is a shame for my homeland, as is sowing hostility - it has nothing to do with Christian values or basic human solidarity."
President Nawrocki vetoed the amendment that would have extended the “800 plus” benefit to Ukrainian children, arguing it should only go to those with working parents in Poland.
The veto follows the president’s campaign promise to tighten welfare payments amid rising anti-Ukrainian sentiment in the country. Nawrocki, who took office earlier this month, emphasized that only Ukrainians in employment should receive child benefit payments.
